What do you mean by IP ?
IP is the short form of the word INTERNET PROTOCOL which is a protocol ( or rule , method ) followed by which the data is sent among computer and devices over internet . So, IP is the rule under which computer communicates among themselves over internet. As with the exponential increase in the number of connected devices , the newer and more accommodating and advanced IP version will come into practice and detailed definition will change accordingly . Hence when we define an IP , we define it with respect to the particular internet protocol ( i.e. IPv4 IPv6 etc ) . We will read about these later in this article.
IP works on the format of PACKETS ( or DATAGRAMS ) and addressing them to make it recognize . Most of the networks use IP with one more higher level protocol called TCP ( Transmission Control Protocol) , which establishes a virtual connection between the destination and source of the data.
IP can be understood like our postal system which allows us to address a package and drop it in the system , but there is no direct link between you and recipient , here TCP/IP establishes a connection between two so that these two can send packets ( data) back and forth for a period of time .
And What is IP Address ?
As we now know that IP is the rule or method by which two computers communicates among themselves, but for communication every device must have a particular address to be recognized which in turn is the IP address of that particular device. So , an IP address , in general term , is the identifying number for a piece of network hardware by which it can communicate to other devices over an IP based network ( like internet ) .
An IP address it the combination of two parts, one is identification of the particular network on internet and another part is identification of the particular device.
Please note that from the router to other router over the internet, only internet part of the address is looked at and recognition of particular device comes later .
So, lets know the network part of IP Address
The internet is the interconnection of a large number of individual network ( internet is also reffered as INTERNETWORK ) and IP ( Inter Protocol ) is the rule which has to be adhere for the communication between one network to another in internet . For communicating to each other , each network must have its unique identification ( address )to get recognized ,for this communication to happen . This unit network number can be requested from the Network Information Centre and it is included in every packet sent from this network into internet .
And also know about the Host part of IP Address
As there may be many devices connected to a network and hence we need the address ( identification) of the particular device ( or host ) in the network which is communicating.
Now , an IP address should have the unique network number and a unique host number in the particular network for the communication on internet . The host number is also called as LOCAL or MACHINE ADDRESS .
Sometime a very large network is divided into Sub-Networks ( sub-net) and hence the some part of local address can indicate the specific sub-net.
How an IP Address Looks Like ?
The format of IP address is a 32-bit numeric address written as four numbers who are separated by periods . These four numbers each can be anything between 0 to 255 .

If you are the owner of a private network , you can assign IP address to the particular computers without repeating any address but when you are connecting your network you have to use registered IP address ( known as Internet Addresses ) which is unique all over internet .
What is an IP Address Used For ?
An IP address provides an identity to a networked device. Similar to a home or business address supplying that specific physical location with an identifiable address, devices on a network are differentiated from one another through IP addresses.
IP address serve the same purpose what our postal address serves for the delivery of our postal mails at our home . As we have our PIN Code , Street Address and then our House Number
