What happens to CCTV System in case of Power Cut I Does CCTV Camera System Works in Case of Power Cut I Does CCTV Camera Starts Automatically One Power Comes after a Power Cut I Does the CCTV System Start With Accurate Date & Time Setting after Power Cut I Does CCTV Systems Saves the Feed in Case of Power Cut I
It will not work if it don’t have any secondary power backup, simple. LOL. For recording , motion detection or remote communication using internet , everything needs power and hence it will totally stop working .
The above answer is correct to the direct question asked, but we think the above question has some not on the view questions hidden in it, which may be.
1-Does CCTV Camera will automatically switched on once the power comes after power cut . And if yes ,will they retain the previous setting and date or it will go to the original default settings and date.
2-Can we make CCTV camera run on some secondary power back up and if yes , then what all are the options and for how long it will work on those options.
3-In case of camera switched off due to power cut , do the previous recordings (up to the time it got switched off) will be saved or not .
Lets go to the above three questions one by one .
Qtn.1-Does CCTV Camera will automatically switched on once the power comes after power cut. And if yes ,will they retain the previous setting and date or it will go to the original default settings.
The answer to this question is yes , once the power comes , the CCTV System ( Camera & DVR / NVR ) automatically starts working in the same setting condition with correct present time and date . There is a small battery ( CMOS ) battery in the DVR / NVR which gives power to stores the setting and time data once power goes . These CMOS(Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) batteries are also known as Real Time Clock , Non-Volatile Ram ( NVRAM) or CMOS RAM . CMOS is an on-board, battery powered semiconductor chip inside the DVR/NVR/Computers etc which stores information. This information ranges from the system time and date to system hardware settings for your computer.
Please note that if your DVR/NVR /CCTV is not returning to the previous date and setting automatically after the power comes , there may be issue with the CMOS battery and you may need to replace it .
Note: Learn more about CMOS batteries.
Qtn.2- Can we make CCTV camera run on some secondary power back up and if yes , then what all are the options and for how long it will work on those options.
Security Cameras without secondary power don’t work in case of power cut and a power cut is as good as a house with no security systems installed for the criminals or thieves. But don’t worry , you can take few steps and make your house / property safe by 24 Hours x 365 Days .
(A)-Connect the CCTV System to your home UPS –If you already have one UPS for your home , the chances are more that it will be enough heart to take care of the power need of security system pertaining to the very less power requirement by a home security system having few cameras .
(B)-Buy a New UPS specially for Security System – If you don’t have a home UPS and do not want to invest much for bigger UPS powering full home , you can just buy specially designed UPS only for your security systems . Please note to keep in mind the size of your security systems and combined power requirement of all the devices and the frequency and duration of power cut in your area .
(C)-Use Battery Powered CCTV Cameras –There are two type of battery powered CCTV cameras are there in the market , one with rechargeable batteries which you have to connect to the power source and when there is power it will run on power and in case of power cut it will run on its battery power . The other types don’t have charging facility in the camera and you have to change battery when it becomes weak . You can use chargeable battery for this camera , but the charging has to be done outside . In both type of cameras , you will get beep sound when battery becomes weak .
(D)-Use Solar Powered Cameras – A solar powered camera is nothing but a camera which is getting its power feed from a solar system . We recommend you to keep a solar chargeable battery depending on the total consumption of your security system and duration of power cut in your area.
There are two ways we can solar power a CCTV System . The first one is using a central solar system and connecting the security system to it .
(E)-Use Backup Generator – Where these generator are not advised for an area with very less power cut and for small system , they comes handy for the areas with long duration power cuts where UPS powering have its limit . These generators alone are not advised as it takes time even for auto-start generators to supply power ( may be 1 to1.5 min ) and hence are advised to be used for giving backup to the UPS or camera battery to get recharged .Again these generators costs huge amount and one should compare the spending and security risk . Mostly these generators are used in businesses and for the common power supply of a gated community or apartment.
Note – In all the above cases, and specially for the areas prone to very longer power cut or the premises having huge security system installations , we recommend to use a back-up generator . This generator runs on fossil fuel and comes handy in long duration power cuts in which your UPS battery may get drained.
Qtn.3-In case of camera switched off due to power cut , do the previous recordings (up to the time it got switched off) will be saved or not .
The DVR & NVR saves and rewrite data continuously and not in interrupted time packets and hence it will be saved. Also, one the power comes , the video will start recording with actual time and date ( If the CMOS battery of the system is working fine ) .
