Smoke Alarm Types
Smoke Alarms are of Three Types –
1-Ionization Smoke Alarms
2-Photoelectric Smoke Alarms
3-Combination Type Smoke Alarms

Ionization Smoke Alarms –

These are the widely used smoke detectors . It is best at work for the clean burning fire that produces small particle during combustion .

These alarms contains a small amount of radioactive material ( Alpha particle producing source ) in them . The Alpha Particle make the chamber ionized and hence conductive . The radiation passes through this ionization chamber which is an Air Filled space between two electrodes and allows small current to flow between electrodes . If smoke enters the chamber, it absorves the Alpha Particle consequently reducing the ionization and interrupting this current and setting off the alarm .
This type of Alarm detect invisible fire particle ( associated with fast flaming fire ) sooner than photoelectric alarms .And hence , these alarms respond best to the fast raging fire .

Advantage of Ionization Smoke Detectors –

Detects invisible product of combustion -It can detect fire that are in incipient stage.

Fast Acting – Provides for earlier detection than other types of smoke detectors or thermal detectors

Dis-advantage of Ionization Smoke Detectors –
May provide false detection if used where volatile solvents, conductive material dusts, or high humidity are present
Detects the presence of smoke only, not toxicity
Has a potential for high false alarm rate

Photoelectric Smoke Alarms
It is the most common Smoke Detector used today . It detects smoke by using either two principle of fire – 1- Light Obscuration , 2- Light Scattering . It works best at smokes originating from fire producing large particle during combustion .

Spot type photoelectric smoke detectors using the light obscuration principle have a light emitting device, usually a light-emitting diode (LED), a smoke chamber, and a photosensitive device that receives the light directly from the light source and produces a monitored current.
Smoke that enters the smoke chamber reduces the intensity of tech light reaching the photosensitive device, which reduces the monitored current. When the intensity drops below a certain level, the sensor control circuitry detects a drop in the current produced by the photosensitive device. When the current falls below a preset threshold, the smoke alarm is triggered.
Spot type photoelectric smoke detectors that use the light scattering principle are constructed similarly to the detectors that use the light obscuration principle except that the photosensitive device is set so that it cannot see the light source directly. When smoke enters the chamber, the smoke particles reflect the light from the source into the photosensitive receiver. When sufficient light intensity is detected, the alarm is triggered.

Photoelectric Smoke Alarms operate using a light source , a light beam collimating system and a photoelectric sensor . After smoke reaches the optical chamber and while crossing the path of the light beam some of the light is scattered by the smoke particle , directing it to the sensor and activating the alarm .
These type of alarm detect visible fire particle sooner ( associated with slow smoldering fires ) sooner than Ionization alarm and hence these alarms respond best to the slow smoldering fires .
Advantages of Photoelectric Smoke Detectors:
Sensitive to visual particles of smoke
Detects smoldering low heat fires
Provide early warning
Disadvantages of Photoelectric Smoke Detectors:
Early contamination by dust causing reduced sensitivity
Detects presence of smoke, not toxicity
Must be cleaned on a regular basis
Has a potential for high false alarm rate

Difference Between Ionization Smoke Alarm and Photoelectric Smoke Alarm –

Combination Type Smoke Alarms
Combination Smoke Alarms features both Photoelectric and Ionization type of techniques . Ionization alarms responds faster to high energy fires whereas photo electric detectors respond bettter to low energy smoldering fires .
We recommend using either the combination type of alarms or a design a system with both type of alarms .

Power Source For Smoke Alarms –
Smoke alarms also can be differentiated on the base of the power source . The most popular are the 9 Volt Battery Powered smoke alarm due to their low cost . Here , it is important to take proper care to replace the battery on a regular basis .
Again , alarms are also available with long lasting 10 years back up Lithiunm -ion battery .
At some places as per the govt law , 12o volt interconnected smoke alarms may require with a common batterty backup in case of power failure . The interconnected feture allow all the smoke alarm to linked together . This is very important in multi level homes and apartment buildings .
